Chasing bank rates

I find it odd how many people, especially among the personal finance blogosphere, track which online banks have the highest rates. For instance, Flexo over at Consumerism Commentary just notified us that HSBC and FNBO both just lowered their rates by a quarter percent. To me, this means absolutely nothing.
